Iron Bowl
There is nothing quite like the Iron Bowl in all of college football. The entire state of Alabama shuts down on Iron Bowl Saturday. This year Auburn hung their sixth consecutive Iron Bowl victory on Alabama, and I couldn’t have been happier that another class of Alabama football players and students will have to live the rest of their lives with the fact that never in their college career did they beat Auburn.
The week of the Iron Bowl, I always think of my friends who associate themselves with “The University” as they call it (whether or not they actually attended Alabama is irrelevant…). It’s a good time to say hello, and talk a little trash. However.. if I don’t check in *before* the game… I don’t dare say anything *after* the game. Mainly because that would be fairly classless.. and because I still want to be friends with these people…
About two years ago, I discovered the best way to enjoy an Iron Bowl victory – by listening to the Alabama post-game show. It’s filled with call-ins from the whiniest, most delusional people on planet earth. And it’s Hilarious.
New Year. New Hand. New Finger.

Passion
Two nights ago, I was wasting time on this laptop of mine in front of the television with CMT playing in the background when the clickity-clack of the keyboard came to a sudden and abrupt stop. Sugarland’s video Stay was playing. I don’t know if you are familiar with this song, or if you’ve seen this video, but it is amazing. I bought the album several months ago, and really liked the song, but never figured it would be played on the radio because it doesn’t fit the mold… it’s a very stripped down song musically, full of the things that are *real*… emotion.. pain… Things that are infinitely more interesting than the ’shiny happy people’ usually portrayed in pop-culture.
As I write this, I’m having a very difficult time concentrating because again, I’m in front of the television and wasting time, and Bruce Springsteen is on Storytellers… Watching him perform is nothing short of mind blowing, for the same reasons I listed above… I was lucky enough to see him perform once, and while I only knew two songs he played all night, it was one of the most amazing shows I’d ever seen because I could feel his passion….
One-Fingered Salute
I think this evening was the worst rush hour traffic of the year to date – though it’s only going to get worse with the oncoming Christmas season. This is a phenomenon I’ve never understood. It’s not like Atlanta suddenly grows by millions of people and traffic suddenly overwhelms the city. That I could understand. It’s also not as if all the traffic is going to the same place, say a mall. That I could also understand. Instead, people just decide they need to go somewhere. Why people decide they need to “go somewhere” around Christmas more than any other time still doesn’t make sense to me, but like a lot of things that don’t make sense – you don’t have to understand them, you just have to play by their rules. In this case, the rules recommend staying at home!
I was attempting to pull out of my parent’s neighborhood onto Piedmont tonight during a green light while cars were blocking the intersection. The whole intersection was admittedly a free-for-all at this point, but I technically had the right of way, so I honked my horn and tried to get through it. Apparently one of the other drivers took offense to my horn, even though they were clearly violating my right-of way. There was eye contact, and he immediately produced the ‘one-fingered salute’. 100% Poultry.
Technically speaking, it was quite impressive. The man had excellent form. Full extension of the right arm across the passenger’s seat, with the hand forming a right angle at the wrist. His facial expression added bonus points.
It bothered me a little at first, but after still sitting in traffic through buckhead thirty minutes later about to lose *my* mind, I could at least understand where he was coming from.
I love the holiday season, but I hate its traffic.
Salt Lake City
On the flight out to Salt Lake City, they showed the movie “Evening”. I didn’t listen to it, but I did watch the screen every now and then… There was a lot of dancing, kissing, and crying… Apparently, it was your standard chick flick.
How lazy are you if you stand on a moving sidewalk?
Yesterday I took some medication for the first time that hit me like a ton of bricks… Took it with breakfast at work, and an hour later, I barely knew my name… Didn’t wear off until this morning… I don’t recommend it.
Pallywood
An interesting video from the television show 60 Minutes that provides a different light on the Israeli – Palestinian conflict. The most surprising aspect of the video was that it was originally aired while Bill Clinton was still President.
