Crested Butte Restaurants

March 19, 2013

Skiing takes a lot out of you during the day, and there is nothing better than a good meal after a long day on the slopes. It may be surprising, but Crested Butte has an amazing restaurant scene considering the size of the town.  After two trips out there, here are my favorite places:

The Secret Stash

I’m a pizza snob, I admit it.  But The Secret Stash has some of the best Pizza I’ve ever eaten.  In fact, it was the only restaurant that I visited on my first trip that I refused to leave town without going to again.  This time, we shared the Texas Bigg’n (Traditional sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, canadian bacon, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms & black olives) and The Asher Pie (BBQ and chipotle base, cheddar cheese, canadian bacon and grilled chicken).  My mouth is still watering just writing this…  Pro Tip: go early on a weeknight otherwise you’ll be waiting until morning for a table (though we hear the restaurant is moving in June to a bigger location…)  Expert Tip: Order wings as an appetizer.  I don’t even like wings, but you could have convinced me to do something illegal to get more of them.

Maxwell’s Steakhouse

We didn’t get to go to Maxwell’s on our first visit, so I was really looking forward to checking it out this year.  I’ll just go ahead and say it.  My filet and I shared a moment that night.  It was a beautiful moment that redefined how I’ll measure steak for the rest of my life.  I’ve eaten some fantastic steaks before, but Maxwell’s steak melted in my mouth and left me dumbfounded only to try and enjoy it’s perfection for as long as I could. We grabbed brunch at Izzy’s on a Sunday morning the day we left.  It’s a pretty small space, it could be tough to get a table, and you’ll probably wait a bit, but the food is worth it.  I ate the Mexicali Latke burrito (think breakfast burrito), and enjoyed every bit of it.  The portions were huge and I didn’t eat again until dinner.  I only wish I’d saved more room to steal more of my fiance’s French Toast!  It would probably be a good idea to call ahead and just pick up your order for take out.

Honorable Mention

While the three above were some of our favorites, we also loved Ryce Asian Bistro, and Django’s (bacon wrapped dates – yum!).  I can’t say I had a bad meal out there.  The skiing is awesome, but it’s not the only thing worth making the trip for!
